Outdoing Yourself

My job demands that I be creative. No matter if it’s designing websites, editing video, or just filming video, I need to outdo myself noticeability every single time. How do I do that?

The answer is relatively simple: never settle.

If you look at my portfolio of website design, you’ll see a clear trend of website design. You can tell what was designed last year and what was designed last week. There’s a clear evolution. Sure, a nice chunk of that evolution was due to software and technological advancements, but you must continually strive to do better with each new project. If you don’t strive to do better, you never will.

If you don’t look back on your previous work and mentally take note of all the things that you could’ve done better, then you’re doing something wrong. In order to beat out the other people in your industry, you need to advance at a more rapid pace than they are. Without rapid innovation, you will fall behind and eventually lose.

Sometimes, you need a kick from behind. Someone pushing you to go further and do more. But once you find that idea, that creative juice, the world is open. Go out and keep doing better than the old you.
